Document Summary

Reproduction-life from life, if you don"t reproduce you die. System- accumulation of parts working together, individually don"t mean much, add them together and have a specific function, must understand interaction. Systems present a dilemma for biologist-systems are complex to study. Even though examining there individual parts is simpler, it may prevent understanding the emergant properties: huge diversity. But unity in structure, same solutions used to solve similar problems in different animals and plants. Total diversity of life; 5-30 mil: unifying themes(flagella and throat hairs, common history(lots of structures in common, biology is complex. Based on observations and then tested with controlled experiments. Emergent properties; properties that result from arrangements and interaction of parts. In the hierarchy a cell lies between organelles and tissues. Theory- is tested a gazillion times, often complex, generates new hypothesis and is testable, supported by lots of evidence. Scientific law- proven, usually explained mathematically, generally straight forward.
