Document Summary

What is energy: energy: the capacity to do work, kinetic energy: energy of movement. Laws of thermodynamics: conservation of energy: the amount of energy in a system remains the same, when converted from one form to another, useful energy decreases. Energy flow on earth: energy input from the sun > photoautotrophs (plants, producers) > heterotrophs (consumers, Metabolic reactions within cells: metabolism: sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell, exergonic + endergonic reactions = metabolism, metabolic pathway (enzymatic): series of reactions linked in a sequence. Ie: a -> b -> c -> d -> e. Pathway 2: two different enzymes recognize the same substrate, c, but create different products through different reactions, this allows for another enzyme to recognize substrate, f, to create product g. Proteins: enzymes regulate chemical reactions, cells couple reactions using proteins or enzymes, electron carriers capture electrons from exergonic reactions and deliver them to endergonic reactions.
