Purpose: produce atp (& regenerate nadh) under anaerobic conditions (without oxygen); used instead of cellular respiration. Similar to cellular respiration: glycolysis is involved in both, both producing 2 net atp (substrate level phosphorylation, 2 nadh are produced in both. Oxygen"s role in cellular respiration: final electron acceptor. Pyruvate is final electron acceptor for lactic acid fermentation. Acetaldehyde is the final electron acceptor for alcohol fermentation. Different from cellular respiration: requirement for oxygen (pyruvate or acetaldehyde) (fermentation- no, Cellular respiration fuels: carbohydrates breakdown polysaccharides into glucose, proteins hydrolyze proteins to amino acids, deaminate (remove) amino acids. Phosphofructokinase (pfk) - key regulatory point in glycolysis. Inhibited by high atp level & high citrate. Purpose of photosynthesis: transforming light energy to chemical energy. Autotroph: plants, producer, make their own chemical energy (or compounds) Stomata - pores where co2 and h2o enter leaf. Veins (or vascular bundles) - transports water from roots to leaves light energy.
