BIOL 1202 Chapter : Ch. 22
Document Summary
22 descent with modification: a darwinian view of life. Evolution: 2 main ideas: change over time of the genetic composition of a population, decent of modern organisms with modification from preexisting organisms. Evolutionary adaptation- accumulation of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms" ability to survive in specific environments. Winners reproduce, losers die: artificial selection, selective breeding of organisms to encourage the occurrence of desirable traits, analogous to natural selection. Evolution is supported by an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence: see it in nature. Natural selection & hiv resistance: start with different variants of hiv particles, single drug reduces fitness of most variants. The rise of mrsa- resistant of forms of antibiotics/ formed from overuse of antibiotics, using a single type of antibiotic= natural selection. Analogous- structures that are similar in function but not in structure and development and evolutionary origin (ex: wings that are both used for flight, but structures are different)
