Document Summary

Primary pathogens have the ability to penetrate the host"s defense. Opportunists can cause disease but only when the host is compromised. Most infections are removed by the immune system. There is a break in the tissue, the immune system is defected, or the absence of one microflora allows an organism to grow. This depends on the organism"s genetic makeup: the lethal dose (ld50) is the number of organisms it takes to kill 50% of hosts. There"s different type of indirect contact: contact with inanimate objects or substances, horizontal transmission via vectors ex: mosquitoes and malaria. It may just depend on the pathogen"s mode of entry. Well, there are sections of its genome called pathogenicity islands. These islands contain virulence genes that code for toxin production, attachment proteins, and capsules (all the stuff that help it get inside your body and stay there). The islands are also transferred as blocks from one organism to another.
