Document Summary

Chapter 2: the cell: organic molecules ( get tables and figures from the book, molecules that contain carbon and hydrogen, structure and function, biomolecules. Lipids: diverse group of molecules, no monomers (so cant string a bunch of these together) Fake fat: tastes good (fat based, zero calories (from fat, ones on the market are carbohydrate, protein or fat based, olestra cannot be digested, disadvantages, undesirable side effects in some individuals, fatty waste. Look at figure in text and make sure you don"t confuse with phospholipids: steroids, cholesterol, source of cholesterol: food (you eat it) and liver (you make it, functions of cholesterol: Interferes with hydrophobic interactions between phospholipids: prevents crystallization of phospholipid, decreases permeability of membrane to water, membrane proteins. Important in kidney and liver: breaks down alcohol -> acetaldehyde: rough er, flattened sacs, granular appearance, functions in synthesis of proteins to be packaged into vesicles, exported out of cell, destined for certain organelles.
