Look at figure in text and make sure you don"t confuse with phospholipids: steroids, cholesterol, source of cholesterol: food (you eat it) and liver (you make it, functions of cholesterol: Interferes with hydrophobic interactions between phospholipids: prevents crystallization of phospholipid, decreases permeability of membrane to water, membrane proteins. Important in kidney and liver: breaks down alcohol -> acetaldehyde: rough er, flattened sacs, granular appearance, functions in synthesis of proteins to be packaged into vesicles, exported out of cell, destined for certain organelles.
