Document Summary

Structure and function: biomolecules- molecules that make up all living things, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and proteins, nucleic acid. 4 bonding sites, many different things can bond with carbon: molecules that contain carbon and hydrogen, know the 4 macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins & nucleic acids. Know their monomers (basic repeating unit) their roles and how they differ. Monomers are the smallest units: organic molecules that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, ch20, monosaccharide: c6h12o6. The only fuel that cells and mitochondria are able to burn. Carbohydrates: disaccharide: two molecules have been joined together with the removal of a water molecule. 2 monosaccharides joined covalently: sucrose, lactose, polysaccharide: many monosaccharides. What is the function of fat in your body: diverse group of molecules, no monomers, insoluble in water, hydrophobic, consist primarily of hydrocarbon chains and rings, your energy reserve! (1 gram fat = 2x energy in 1 gram carbs)
