Our current model broadened from a focus on the individual body to an understanding of health as a reflection of ourselves and our communities. Medical model: (pre-20th century) health status focused on the individual"s body, focused on disease treatment. Public health model (ecological): disease and negative health viewed as a result of interaction with physical and social environment. Disease prevention: (focus in 1940s) focus shifts to reducing factors causing injury and illness. Wellness became a term in 1960s, enlarging the definition of health by recognizing levels of health within each category. In 1968, rene dubos proposed a broader definition of health as quality of life, involving social, emotional, mental, spiritual and biological fitness on the part of the individual, which results from adaptations to the environment.
