Parasite an organism that lives in/on another organism for prolonged period of time. Infection: invasion of the body by organisms with the potential to cause disease. To infect: to enter, inhabit, and reproduce within another organism. Disease: characterized by presence of clinical signs/symptoms caused by the organisms infecting your body. Commensal: infects but does not cause disease in host. Parasites fall in to 3 basic categories: 1. Host endeavors to defend against and ultimately remove parasite. Main goals of parasite: survive and reproduce (not to kill host) Host defense mechanisms: physical barriers skin and mucous membranes, nonspecific defenses occurs the same way every time no matter what the cause, specific, acquired defenses: immune system. Immunity from the greek word exempt": skin an impermeable barrier until broken with some type of lesion. Mucous membrane cells have nucleus vs. skin cells that don"t have any organelles: wbcs aka leukocytes. Antimicrobial proteins and other cytokines (lysozymes in sweat).
