BIOL 4246 Chapter : 6 5 12
Document Summary
6/5/12: prokaryotes are haploids, often only have a single copy of most genes. May have multiple chromosomes but each is haploid. Can have multiple copies of the chromosome but they are all identical. Thus haploid: vibrio cholera has a large and small chromosome, barrellia burgdorferi causes lyme disease and has multiple chromosomes. Most bacteria have circular chromosomes, but this one has linear chromosomes: deinococcus radiodurans as the most resistant organism, highly resistant to desiccation, radiation, ph changes, because of its dna repair capabilities. In its minimum it has 4 copies of each chromosome. Newly wrong but still really wrong: bacteria are promiscuous, pan genome- because bacteria can so freely interact and exchange dna you need to look at more than one bacterium. Take the dna sequence of e. coli strains and compare them. one e. coli strain has between 4,000 and 6,000 unique genes.
