Pope boniface viii (1294-1303) was particularly attracted to the political side of the papacy. In fact, he loved to dress up as a roman empire. Pope boniface viii put an end to the king being able to tax church. He released a papal statement known as the unam sanctum (1302) which stated that the church controls all things political and spiritual. In other words, kings had to obey the pope. There were a number of powerful people in europe who read the unam sanctum and disagreed with him. King philip the fair of france (1285-1314) was angered by his proposal, and arranged for some knights to kidnap boniface viii (1303). The people of italy rose up against the knights to free the pope, and in the commotion, boniface viii died of a heart attack. pope (1305). During his rule, clement v moved the papacy from rome to avignon.
