Document Summary

The fact that the strength of this study is that it is easily testable and it is seen in many different areas makes it even more upsetting. The study provides evidence that the norms in one society can be completely different in another. For example in guam, where thinness is more common and is a desirable trait, it is more likely that people who are overweight have a negative self-image and are portrayed negatively by others, as well. People form their opinions about self-image based on the setting that they were raised in. The results vary based our where you live and how you were raised, but the theory stays constant. Its consistent because no matter your circumstances, people still define themselves based on interpretation of others. The weakness of this study is that this theory actually exists. People base themselves too much on what they look like or what other people see them as.
