CMST 2010 Chapter : Verbal Communication
Document Summary
Meaning principals: meaning in people- we get meaning from the person who says it, cant just rely on the meaning itself, you have to rely on the person that says it. Ex: if a newly involved person in a relationship says they will call later, they are prob sitting by the phone. More of a meaning than just a word, depending on context or situation, it can influence the meaning. Triangulation of meaning- thing, symbol, thought/idea: meanings are unique- words that we have can represent a majority of things, words have multiple definitions. Denotative- dictionary definition of a word, basic definition. Connotative- subjective definition, a lot of different types of symbols and different definitions, your idea of things. Equivocal- something has more than one meaning: meanings are context based- some of the meaning comes from the context its tied to the context. Emotional state- what we experience in a response to an event, happen in direct response to a situation.
