Ethos is something granted by the audience to the speaker, rather than something "delivered" by the speaker to an audience. Ethos is thus a working relationship between speaker and the audience, the audience has the nal say. Ethos is the capacity to in uence an audience bsed on audience"s perceptions of the credibility and character of the speaker in relationship to their own interests and values. (cid:12254) Inherited ethos is the actual reputation that a rhetor "carries with them" because of an audience"s acquaintance with past behavior. (cid:12254) Persona is the ethos that a rhetor creates for himself or herself within the con nes of a particular rhetorical text/speech.
