Document Summary

Storming: members compete for status and openly disagree. Norming: members resolve status conflicts and establish norms. Performing: members assume appropriate roles and work productively. Groups need to move through at least 4 stages in order to reach max effectiveness. Primary tension: the social unease and stiffness that accompanies the getting acquainted stage in a new group. (all want to create a good impression, so they are acting over polite) Recognizing and discussing primary tensions is one way of breaking the cycle. Socialization: the process by which an individual acquires the social knowledge and skills necessary to assume an organizational role: antecedent phase: ones own experiences and such. Groups address the conflict cohesion dialectic and the leadership followership dialectic. Without this stage, a group may fail to establish productive member roles, appropriate leadership responsibilities and clear goals. Secondary tension: almost opposite of those of primary tensions. There is a high level of energy and agitation.
