Study of how disorders arise and change with time (may have been okay at one point in child"s life but not in another) ex) temper tantrums, imaginary friends. Disruption of early skills will likely disrupt development of later skills. The younger the child is the more malleable the child is. Associated with behavioral, cognitive, social, and academic problems. Cluster 2: symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity cluster. Symptoms must be present prior to age 7! Occurs in 4%-12% of children who are 6-12 years of age. Symptoms are usually present around age 3 or 4. Pervasive: means the problems span the person"s entire life. Poor eye contact, little, if any, interest in relationships. 50% never acquire useful speech unusual speech; echolalia poor ability to maintain communication with others lack of make-beieve or spontaneous play. Restricted patterns of behavior, interests, and activities (stereotyped behavior) Preoccupation with restricted patterns of interest (abnormal in intensity)
