1) You will write a journal entry for each tutoring session. The journal entry should contain the
following information:
a) Date of session, time of session: beginning and ending (i.e., 9:00-10:00AM); grade and
subject in which you are tutoring.
b) Host teacher’s name and school in which you are tutoring
c) Instead of a name, you will refer to your student by a number (Student #1, Student #2,
etc.). Confidentiality of the students must be protected at all times. NEVER refer to your
student(s) throughout this assignment by name!
d) Session Objective: What is the objective of the tutoring session? Are you reviewing
previously taught information, using a different strategy to reinforce information,
assisting the student in completing an assignment, etc?
e) Give a detailed, play-by-play account of the tutoring session. Think about the following:
How did you approach the task? How did you develop a working relationship with the
student? What barriers did you/student have to overcome? How did you reinforce
learning?, etc. There is no specific length to the journal entries, but you need to give a
very detailed description of each session.
f) After each tutoring session, write a short “note home” to the caregiver that indicates
how the student responded to the tutoring session. It would be helpful for you to also
indicate how this student can continue to work on the skill at home. This will be a good
timeto use a little creativity. For example, card games that reinforce numbers (Uno,
various forms of Concentration, etc.), activities that reinforce visual discrimination,
patterns, etc. (such as jig saw puzzles), games that reinforce money skills (Monopoly),
are fun ways of practicing particular skills that aren’t worksheet oriented. This activity is
designed to provide you practice in home/school communication. Each note may be
included at the bottom of each journal entry.
IV. Reaction (20 points)
React to your complete 15-hour block. The reaction must be 2 to 3 pages in length and
double spaced. The reaction paper must include:
(a) a description of the students you tutored and observed,
(b) instructional procedures used (both as part of tutoring and the instructional
procedures you observed in class observations),
(c) behavioral management strategies (those you used as well as those you observed
teachers use in the classroom),
(d) description of the overall classroom and tutoring environment, (e) assessment
procedures (those procedures observed and used in tutoring),
(f) what instructional, behavioral management and assessment strategies/procedures
appeared to be effective,

(g) what instructional, behavioral management and assessment strategies/procedures
appeared to be ineffective, and
(h) what was your overall reaction to the entire lab/participation block experience.
Relate procedures and strategies studied in class (use appropriate terminology) to the
above (in other words reflect on your course readings, class discussions, etc and
identify the overlap between course content and your experiences in the field work).
Please use the letters/titles in the question as headers for this part of the assignment.
It is expected that your written work will be organized as outlined in the syllabus and
the presentation will be clear, grammatically correct and turned in on time.

Outline for Observations
In writing your observations, record what you have seen. Do not inject your personal feelings. Be an
objective observer. Later, in your “reaction”, you can relate your personal opinions of the classrooms in
which you work. The following outline is intended to give you ideas of different areas you might
consider as you observe. You should address each of the topic areas in your observation paper. Do not
try to answer every question under each topic, but do select certain factors on which to focus your
attention.
Self-Contained Classroom Observation
Getting the class started
What brings the class to attention?
How are initial routines handled?
How is continuity with previous work established?
What motivational techniques are used?
Knowledge, variety, and creativity in teaching
What kinds of activities are provided?
Does instruction consider the needs of the students?
Is the focus/objective of the lesson clear?
Is direct instruction provided?
Are the students actively engaged in learning?
Are provisions made considering the various abilities of the students?
