ENGL 0004 Chapter : Romantic Poetry
Document Summary
It has been suggested that the ballad, rime of the ancient mariner is a perfect example of romantic period poetry. The poem includes all six of the elements of romanticism literature. It has the use of the imagination, an appeal to the reader"s emotions, a concern for humanity, a concern for the individual, an involvement of supernatural forces, and a strong love for nature. Samuel taylor coleridge uses these key elements to describe how an old mariner learns a tough lesson after killing an albatross at sea. Coleridge uses his imagination to create spirits who terrorize the old mariner. The mariner detects the spirits, yet they never talk directly to him, only about him. Death, and the two voices he hears in part iv of the poem are only imagined by the mariner. This story appeals to the reader"s emotions after the mariner is finally able to sleep and pray.
