ENGL 1001 Chapter : English Solitary Confinement
Document Summary
Just like on any subject, there are pros and cons to solitary confinement. There are two types of solitary confinement, short-term and long-term. Solitary confinement is intended for the worst of the worst prisoners who may be a threat to others, are considered to be extremely dangerous, and are perceived to be not controllable any other way. Short-term confinement, also called disciplinary segregation, is often used as punishment for rule breaking within the prison. Long-term confinement, also known as administrative segregation, is mostly used on supermax prisoners. These prisoners are locked in a solid steel, individual cell for twenty three hours a day. For the one hour a day when they are allowed to leave their cell, these inmates are chained and guarded by prison staff. These prisoners are also fed in their cell and allowed to exercise for only one hour a day (katel 1).
