Document Summary

In every story there is a silence, some sight concealed, some word unspoken, i believe. Till we have spoken the unspoken we have not come to the heart of the story (coetzee 141): m. coetzee"s novel foe, which is woven around the pre existing plot of. Robinson crusoe by daniel defoe, is metafiction which is when the author alludes to the artificially and literalness of a work by parody and departing from traditional narration. Foe there are two themes that really stand out one being speech/silence and the other being the quest for truth. For coetzee, writing foe was kind of like deconstructing the classic robinson crusoe. In writing and reading foe, robinson crusoe seems fragile, fixed, and not sturdy, but timeless. There are a few main differences in these two novels such as foe being told from the perspective of a woman, friday can"t speak, and crusoe never makes in back to england.
