Owing to this condition of mind, man cannot avoid looking backwards and comparing the impressions of past events and actions. Consequently he resolves to act differently for the future this is conscience. Throughout the entire excerpt entitled, the descent of man, charles darwin is explaining why he believes men as a species evolved from lower animals like the monkeys. Due to darwin"s childhood and background, he was able to board the beagle, and by exploring the world, he began his theory of evolution. ( charles darwin ). The old world monkeys along with their descendants and other animals are incapable of higher mental powers. This passage also thoroughly explains characteristics of memory and being able to think about the future, adding to man"s differences and superiority to these lesser animals. By being able to clearly remember the past, humans evolved to develop a conscience, warning us against making the same mistake twice.
