It is said that a king is only as great as his people. In joseph conrad"s heart of darkness (2008), the underlying themes of power, madness, and fate verses free will strongly parallel the themes of. Mr. kurtz"s hunger for power mirrors macbeth"s thirst for the throne, which ultimately leads both of these men to their downfalls. The african bush and its natives lures morality out of the hearts of the europeans just as the three witches and the guilt of bloodshed lure the reason out of macbeth"s troubled mind. Inevitably, kurtz rises to the top by taking matters into his own hands, capturing macbeth"s strategy to success. The desire for power leads to the most tragic of falls for kurtz and macbeth. Macbeth was only a general, but strove to reign as king of scotland. It was not good enough for him that he was thane of.
