ENGL 2027 Chapter : Genre Criticism
Document Summary
Use the reading and writing techniques practiced in class to complete your demonstration. Genre criticism is another important technique used in analyzing poetry. This skill articulates and classifies poems based of patterns, structure, and rhyme schemes. To categorize a poem based on genre the read must first read through the poem and classify it based of structure (i. e. stanza design) and rhyme scheme. There are six genres of poetry: couplet, triplet, quatrain, ballad, sonnet, and villanelle. After selecting an identified genre, the reader must clarify how the poem either follows or breaks the conventions of that genre. The final step of genre criticism is the most significant of the skill. This step requires the reader to describe how the conventions either created or broken in the second step gives meaning to the poem.
