ENGL 2027 Chapter : Diction Demo
Document Summary
Use the reading and writing techniques practiced in class to complete your demonstration. Throughout any literary work, the chosen diction used in that body of work is a significant clue to understanding that piece. Diction being the words strategically chosen by the author to convey meaning, can reveal an authors reasoning and viewpoints throughout their text. When attempting to unearth an author"s thoughts about a poem, there are several steps that can be taken to simplify this process. The first few steps are similar to those used in the skill of summarizing a poem. These steps include marking any words that signify some importance, marking repeated words, and identifying in chains or significant words or phrases. Next, think about the author"s speech and diction throughout the poem. Ask yourself questions like what time period was the poem written in or is the poem modernistic or historic . The final step is to describe the mood and tone of the poem.
