Office: allen 240b 10:20-10:50; 1:30-2:40 mwf, or by appt. Objectives: to develop in the student an ability to analyze, evaluate, and understand poetry. In this class we will evaluate the technique, style, and values of the various writers; and differentiate between types of poetry. We will place and interpret texts within a discursive tradition and within broader cultural and historic contexts. We will also discuss different critical strategies in writing about texts and focus on explication and analysis. Requirements: there will be two main papers: one short paper (3-5 typed pages) and one longer one (5-10 pages). There will also be other short writing assignments from time to time. Students will also keep a journal in which they will comment on and analyze poems (choose two per week) read in class, and they will participate in group discussions. Late papers will receive a grade penalty for every day that they are late. (this course meets general education requirements. )
