Document Summary
Emily was the daughter of a well known colonel, who had a large contribution of money to the town in which exempt him and his daughter emily from paying taxes. When her father died all he had left was the house, in which he left for emily to keep. As time went on a newer and younger regimen of another generation began to manage the town, they disregareded the fact that emily was excused from paying taxes. The leaders of the town made several unsuccessful attempts to get her attention about paying her taxes. The narrator takes the story back to when her father was still alive and she was a young lady. Her father was a very strict and over protective man who never allowed anyone to marry his daughter. When her father finally died she had turned thirty years old, and was still single.
