Document Summary
Earns his ph. d. from the university of havana. Becomes part of the avant-garde writers circle origenes. Goes into exile in buenos aires in mid 1940s, fleeing political oppression under batista regime. In the 1950s, his works like the novel la carne de rene continue to build pinera"s notoriety. After the 1959 revolution, pinera becomes an editor of an important weekly journal and many of his plays, novels, stories, and poems are published by the revolutionary government. During the 1960s, the cultural politics in the revolution quickly changed and he and other experimental writers were soon censored. The government engaged in a homophobic which-hunt that removed gay men and women from their professions. The government"s distancing of itself from pinera is thought to also be attributed to his sexuality. Pinera continued to write, sharing his work with friends in underground circles, some of these later works were published abroad. He died in public isolation and poverty in 1979.
