Document Summary

Chapter 5 ecosystems: energy, patterns, and disturbance 1/25/17. Biomes: ecosystems having similar vegetation and climactic conditions. Tropic levels - energy and nutrients travel up tropic (feeding) levels to other organisms. Food chain - describes where energy and nutrients go as they move from one organism to another. 10% rule when predator consumes something, 10% of energy stays at the trophic go to higher levels. Food web - interconnection of food chains to form complex feeding relationships level. The rest is lost as heat, co2, etc. Autotrophs - produce organic material from inorganic matter by using an external energy source (producers) Heterotrophs must consume organic material to obtain energy (consumers and decomposers) Chemosynthesis - some bacteria use energy in inorganic chemicals (to form organic matter from co2 and h2o) Primary production - production of organic matter through photosynthesis and growth of producers. Fermentation - a modified form of respiration of some decomposers (bacteria and yeasts)
