World Geography 1001- Russia and the Soviet Union
Russia is still the largest country in the world not by population but by the Land.
60,000 miles East to West. They have 9 time Zones across Russia. 140 Million
people. Home to the greatest political and social experiment in history called
communism. USSR or the Soviet Union (SU) are the names called during
Communism.
Tsars were emperors, which is the Russian word for Caesar. Beginning in the 1500’s
when Western Europe expended the colonial European powers, the Tsars in Russia
began to do the same thing too. The Russians started in the core and expanded
towards the East and then the South. They made it to the Pacific Ocean and got to
conquer important agricultural area like Ukraine. Had rich mineral deposits. They
conquered central Asia, Uzbekistan, which they can control the ancient trade route
of the Silk Road that Marco Polo found. They had a superior military; they would
take the local resources for their own use. Same as the Europeans, they invested in
very little in their local development. They moved Ethic Russians into the conquered
and colonized areas. Tsars Russia was a colonial period. They couldn’t claim that
the sun never set on their empire. What they built was the largest and contiguous
empire. They called it one country which included more than 100 different nations,
all of then forced to learn Russian so they can become Russianized,; they eventually

was one giant Ruby, which was a 415 caret Ruby. Which was made for Katherine
Tsarina the 12th.
The Russian people did not share the Wealth, half of the population lived in poverty
and lived in Serfdom, which parallels the slavery in the US. They were called serfs.
They have significant different differences. Serfdom was not ethnically or morally
based by race. It was not colonized colonies; it was Russians who served into
servitude. They were not commodities that can be bought or sold by their owners.
They were tied to the land they lived on, if the land was sold, the serfs came with it.
