Wind vane (weather vane): measures wind direction with a fin mounted on a vertical rod. Aerovane: combines a wind vane and anemometer into a single instrument: the beaufort scale: used to rank wind speeds (used back in 1800s, pre instrument scales) Based on wind"s observed effects on objects, rather than on directly measured wind speeds: wind direction: winds are names for the direction from which they originate. Example- a wind from the west is a westerly wind. (blowing eastward) 0 or 360 winds are coming from the north: naming the winds. Naming using compass or degree headings: named by direction they blow from. Names in relation to water and land in coastal area: coastal winds are names by the direction in relation to sea and land. Names based on the prevailing direction of winds: most frequently from a certain direction over a defined period, portraying wind on a map.
