GEOG 2050 Chapter : Chapter 1 1 Gases
Document Summary
Matter: anything that takes up space-has a mass and volume: 3 different forms: solids, liquids, and gases. Atom: basic unit of matter: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Same number of protons. (ex: hydrogen and oxygen: periodic table of elements: symbols, mass, and number of protons for each element. Molecules: atoms combine to form molecules (ex: h2o) A substance that resists changes of shape and volume, characterized by order or boding to form a structure. (ex: rocks have a fixed molecular structure). Substances that flow freely in response to unbalanced forces: molecules move freely past one another as individuals or small groups, liquids exhibit pressure (force/area) Density: density= mass/volume, mass= amount of matter in an object (kg, weight= force of gravity on an object (lb, mass is not the same as weight. For example: an object with a mass of 1kg on earth is still 1kg on the moon, but weights 1/6 as much (different gravity on the moon)
