Document Summary

Earths energy budget: output from the sun, distance of earth from sun, daily rotates creating energy imbalance, seasonally, latitudes. Atmosphere functions as a filter and absorbs: gamma rays. Energy pathways: short wave energy from the sun, long wave energy from earth. Transmission: passage of energy through atmosphere or water. Insolation input: all the radiation received at earths surface: direct and indirect. Insolation in the atmosphere encounters dust, gases, clouds and smoke. About 45% of insolation makes it to the earths surface. Scatter : changing direction of the lights movement, without altering its wavelength. Absorb: the assimilation of radiation by molecules of matter. The conversion of energy from one form to another. Reflect: insolation(light) is bounced off a surface without being absorbed or scattered. Refract: change in speed and direction of light. Occurs when insolation is not absorbed, but is bounced in all direction. Scatter agents: dust, pollutants, ice, cloud droplets, water vapor. Diffuse radiation: the downward component of scattered light.
