GEOL 1001 Chapter : Geology Chapters Outline
Document Summary
Canyons: uniformitarianism- states that physical, chemical, and biological processes that operate today have also operated in the geological past. Has 2 types: continental crust (many rock types. Generates earth"s magnetic field: inner core- solid due to immense pressure, the rock cycle- helps us understand the origin of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks form from crystallization. If exposed to surface, they will weather (disintegrate the rocks) and will be left with sediment. The sediment will undergo lithification (conversion into rock) and will become sedimentary rock. The sedimentary rock reacts to the changing environment and becomes metamorphic rock: the principals of earth"s surface, ocean basins- have volcanos, deep canyons, the ocean floor contains continental margins(adjacent to major landmasses), Chapter 2 outline: continental drift- all continents once existed as a supercontinent. They drifted to their current positions: pangea- name of supercontinent. Means all lands: evidence is from fossils. Creating new sea floor: convergent plate boundaries- 2 plates move together.
