They were concerned with human experience and human life. Earliest greek lit that we know if is poetry. Poetry was very important to them, it was the best form of writing. It was very public, it was shared and meant to be enjoyed amongst the citizens. The illiad - one of the earliest poems. Greeks believed greatly in the power of words rhetoric- used to persuade, argue a point, convince. type of speech. In athens there was a yearly literary contest (who could write the best play) the winners play would be performed in public. They often wore masks to portray who they were. chorus- basically a narrator, sets theme, explains, etc. Most plays were either tragedies or comedies. catharsis- you would be so moved by a play your emotions would show. crying, anger, sadness. They both wrote histories with no gods, it was about human action and war. Thucydides wrote about the paly. wars (between city states)
