These civs are "classical" because they set a standard of how to live. It left a legacy, and set a bar for what "civilization" should be. The ancient greeks were the first to distinguish themselves as "western". They felt they were better and represented a different type of society. They had a sense of identity. and that they had created a superior type of civ. Greece is not very flat, has a lot of volcanic activity, and is mostly islands. They don"t have as many rivers, they arent as big. Greek settlement was very isloated, and was inconsitent. It had many barriers of mountains and islands. Their economy was very dependent on sea trade. Their isn"t much evidence on very early greeks, it is mostly archaeologial, from. Settled on the island of crete, and on the island more specifically, knossos. They found a huge palace complex, which included residences, gathering areas.
