Philosophy comes about because of the dissatisfaction with the geek gods. Pre-philosophers: heraclitus of ephesus (540-480 bc) the only thing that doesn"t change is change itself, empedocles of acragas (490-430 bc) four basic elements of the world: earth, water, fire, air. Everything is a combination of all the elements. Combinations are created by love and strife: leuicppus of miletus (5th century bc-dates unknown) everything you see is made up of tiny little things called atoms. Sophists- those who make it a business of being wise : teachers who teach for money, in athens and other greek cities you could not have someone speak for you. So if you had to go before a jury you had to speak for yourself. If you were going to go before a jury or speak you would hire a sophists and consult with you about the best way to present your rational argument.
