Pre-philosophy (philosophy means love of knowledge or love of wisdom): Logos: there must be something eternal/unchanging that guides all of this. Pythagoras (500 bc: pre-philosopher, associated with pythagorean theorem. Heraclitus of ephesus (540-480 bc: states that the only thing that doesn"t change is change itself, god (logos) changes things. Empedocles of acragas (490-430 bc): 4 elements earth, fire, water, and air, everything is a combination of the 4 elements driven by love and strife. Leucippus of miletus (5th century bc- dates unknown): states everything you see is made of tiny particles called atoms, everything is a different combination of these particles. Socrates accused for being a sophist (he denies this, saying he does not take money for his teachings) Bad reputations: they were not interested in the truth, more interested in winning the case. Significance: furthered the idea of rational argument.
