Fragmentary survival of evidence: often only 1 type of evidence survives over time. Interpretation: context, learn about the culture and the people in order to interpret their history. Different interpretations based on whether it is a legal document, art, personal letter, etc. Intended audience: students/ historians are not the regular audience. Using a document under its intended purpose to make an inference based on context.
