Document Summary

He feels the laws gives us code or an idea to morality but they"re not defined by laws. Hoping to eventually get to a single answer he thinks its because its pleasurable: from nature you experience pain and pleasure. His argument is it doesn"t matter if your offended, it"s all about the people who were right there experiencing it: fan of social welfare policies, basis of modern economics, problems, if good = pleasure, why. Mill says promote the higher pleasure: we cant harm others if it creates more overall utility. The only purpose for which power can be rightfully excercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will. Against: conservative political order, church that has political power, unrestrained kings, slavery, universal sufferage, direct democracy, atheism, social equality. Most liberals were business man and traders, benefitting from the industrial revolution.
