Europe was known as a place to catch slaves and get wood europe was poor. Local society, people stayed where they were born and what occupation they were born into. Citizens would name local territories, local lords, they did not associate with their state. Feudalism and the importance of contracts: some worked 5 days for the lords, other different times all contracts different but still indebted, in return, the lords provided protection to those under him. The protection was worth binding themselves to the lord. Serfdom- bound to the land farm it, work it, tenure have to farm the same land. Ensured the workers that they had a place to stay. Extremely difficult to break contracts, lasted thru multiple generations. Purpose of feudalism: protection and defense in a dangerous world: scarier to be on your own than to go out alone pessimistic attitude of population (better to stay the same than risk some type destruction)
