Why changes in american society were primarily detrimental. There were many different changes that happened in american society after the civil. War to the turn of the century that can be seen to be primarily beneficial and detrimental. Sometimes it is hard to say what is good and bad in history. People in history have benefited from certain changes while others have been harmed. Not everyone can always get the good end of the stick. In their own way, the reconstruction era, losing the frontier, and the movement westward were detrimental to african americans, native americans, and farmers. The emancipation proclamation was issued in 1863, and then president abraham. Lincoln then issued the 13th amendment to ensure that slavery would be abolished. Even though this had happened, it did not necessarily give slaves the freedom they thought they would have. African americans had no respect from any white americans.
