HIST 2057 Chapter : HIST 2057 Paper 1
Document Summary
There were many changes that occurred from the end of the civil war to the turn of the century. These years between 1855 and 1910 were also some of the most significant and vibrant in american history. They set forth developments that would structure the country for years to come including the reunification of the south and north, the integration of four million newly freed african americans, westward expansion, immigration, industrialization, urbanization. It was also a period of reform, in which many americans wanted to regulate corporations and shape the transformations around them. These changes can be considered by many to be primarily detrimental to american society. Two major issues during the reconstruction era (1865-1877) were how to re-unify the country and what to do with former slaves. The creation of the thirteenth amendment in 1865 abolished slavery in the states that rejoined the confederacy after the civil war under abraham.
