Poor living conditions for some: results of increases in technology. Some couldn"t afford public transportation so had to live close to their job. Apartments were put up but had poor conditions, poor sanitation. The word slum was originated when describing where some lived: working conditions. Poorly ventilated and insulated, dirty and poorly lit buildings. Triangle shirtwaist factory disaster - tragic burned down building, made people realize they need to be more prepared for accidents like fires. Migrants and immigration: african-american migration (great migration) Came from the south: push and pull factors. Push: bad economic conditions(smaller wages in south); after construction lots of laws were made to segregate blacks and whites(jim crow laws); the south disenfranchised african americans(poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clause); huge increase in lynching.
