The most dynamic & influential force in american politics in the lat 19th century. Progressives advocated the need for direct intervention in the economy & in social affairs. The muckrakers: wanted to expose injustice & corruption. Thought that the railroads were too powerful & they were corrupt. Targeted the government, & the political machines, & city bosses. Investigated government labor unions, corporations, problem of child labor, the plight of women, & sometimes the oppression of blacks. The social gospel: a powerful movement in american protests, wanted social justice. The social gospel were responsible for spreading the salvation army. Especially concerned with people living in the cities, like poor immigrants. The settlement house: a strong element of progressivism. The settlement house movement believed that environment influenced the individuals. They wanted to improve the conditions in which people lived (especially in the city) Middle-class americans believed it was their responsibility to take care of the poor.
