Starting in 1924 there was no japanese immigration to the u. s. therefore there was only one generation of people coming over to the states. Those people start families and have children who become u. s. citizens. Issei and nisei the first generation that came to the u. s. from japan are the issei. Their children who are born in the us are nisei. The issei cannot become citizens, but the nisei are automatically citizens. The generation of nisei begin to define themselves against their parents by forming organizations: japanese american citizens league (jacl) organization for japanese that are. This is exclusive for nisei and not for issei. The idea was to show that they were proud and supportive of america. They wanted to show that they were american first with japanese parents. The problem they had was the bombing of pearl harbor.
