Document Summary

When ln was unable to get a majority to change the constitution and run again. In dec 1861, he seized control: coup d" tat and asked the french people if they would like to redo the constitution in a plebiscite. Most people were pretty ok with this except for the se region (marsailles). Some 70k people rose in rebellion against this illegal act. Pres. lb sent troops to impose order, declared marshall law, arrested 26k people, had them judged by special courts- mixed commissions. 10k of them are sentenced to deportation (most to n. africa). It would be the last great mass uprising in france (in rural areas at least). The revolt never had a chance since the rest of the country was ne with lb doing what he wanted, because on dec 21, 1851, just three weeks after the coup, they held the plebiscite.
