HIST 4043 Chapter : NOTES CHAPTER 5
Document Summary
England and scotland are not together they are in conflict. England is a fairly large nation compared to european standards at this time. Spain and france were probably the only two that were bigger. In 1500, england was just beginning to recover from the mortality crisis that hit it in the previous centuries so the population was roughly three million. That"s down from a peak of about five million in 1300. There are areas in england that are densely settled and other parts where population density is very low. There is little migration from other places and the english were hostile to foreigners. The land varies from region to region and this has varying effects on the culture of the country. The county is the main administrative unit in the country. People considered themselves residents of a particular county or another. They identified more with their county than the kingdom they lived in.
