HUEC 2040 Chapter : Natural Fibers
Document Summary
From seed of tropical java kapok tree seed-sri lanka. Cut the fiber to the length of cotton fiber to facilitate blending with cotton. Irregular fibers from plat stem and inner bark of stalk 24 in. in length. Higher orientation and crystanllinity (lined up compact structure with not a lot of empty space) than seed and leaft fibers. Retting: partially rotting the fiber to remove the glue from the fiber and separate it from the plant. Structure: long irregular fiber with nodes/ bamboo-like fiber bundles. Aesthetics: irregular appearance to fabric/ light cream to dark tan/ more lustrous than cotton. Durability: strong/ stronger when wet, low elongation. stiff fiber with good abrasion resistance, poor flex abrasion resistance, can be cottonized. Comfort: high morsture regain, quick drying, good conductor of electricity and heat, heavy fiber care: often blended with other fibers, similar to cotton but greater wrinkling. Alternate processes being investigated to remove substance that - holds fibers to stem.
