ID 1051 Chapter : Ancient Roman Arch 112014
Document Summary
Roman aqueducts were built to help water flow from far bodies of water into the major cities, providing water for public baths, fountains, private houses and latrines. Once they found the means to create the aqueduct, the romans also built sewer systems to remove the dirty water and relocate it to other bodies of water. (1) The aqueducts moved water through gravity because they were on a slightly downward slope. They were made out of concrete, stone and brick to keep them sturdy and in place. Thirty miles of the two hundred sixty mile system had mammoth arched structures. Considering how long ago with barely any engineering expertise, the roman aqueduct was a remarkable piece of art. (1) There were eleven main aqueducts by the late 3rd century. There were many aqueducts throughout rome but the bigger ones were the ones supplying the most water throughout rome at the time.
