Ethnocentrism: the assumption that ones own way of life is superior to all others, therefore anyone outside our group may seem abnormal or strange. Ethnocentric attitudes- for example most americans are taught that america is the best country: ethnocentric attitudes in southern culture, ex/ southern food is the best, girls are better looking in the south, southern hospitality. Consumer society- consumption is a mass phenomenon among people, people amongst diverse income categories. Material culture- any physical object that we give a social meaning: ex/ books, computers. Nonmaterial culture- shared sets of meanings (ideas/beliefs: ex/ wedding ring has a symbolic meaning of love and commitment. Language- shared symbols that enables people to communicate: this is a big component of nonmaterial culture. Laws- norms that are defined and enforced by apolitical authority. Sanctions- rewards for appropriate behavior and penalties for inappropriate behavior: negative sanction ex/ going to prison, positive sanction.
